Oral history interview with Zerline Aronin, Dec. 16, 1992.

Aronin describes her early life in Castle Rock, Washington, her parents, David and Rebecca Joelsohn, and the family clothing store. She tells how they moved to Bellingham, Washington, in 1906 after having difficulties keeping kosher in Castle Rock, where they were the only Jewish family. In 1916, on the advice of Rabbi Koch of Temple de Hirsch, the family moved to Seattle to be part of a larger Jewish population. The Aronins bought a house on Spring Street and opened a cigar store downtown. Aronin talks about her education and first marriage to Morris Jacobson of Everett in 1921. From 1925-1928 she ran the Sunday school at the Orthodox synagogue in Everett. After her divorce, Aronin moved back to Seattle and worked for thirteen years at the Emporium store owned by the Poll family. She tells of helping with the war effort in 1942, and taking a day job with armed forces supplier Arthur Berliner and a night job with the U.S. government. After World War II, Aronin opened her own jewelry store at 25th and Columbia, operating it for twenty years until her retirement in 1966. She also mentions her volunteer work with Head Start and her marriage to Herman Aronin in 1952.
